Then he took the advice from the guru of gods, Bruhaspathi to visit Sri Raja Rajeshwara kshetram. Once upon a time god Indra went to many holy places after he killed Vrithasura and still could not purify his life. It is believed that the mosque was built as a tribute to a muslim devotee of Lord Siva who lived for many years in the temple precincts and breathed his last. A unique feature of the temple at Vemulawada is that it also houses a 400 year old mosque inside its premises. The sculptures on the temples also depict the cultures of Jainism and Buddhism. This temple attracts followers of both Vaishnavism (worshippers of Vishnu), and Saivism (worshippers of Siva), and is also being frequented by Jains and Buddists. The significance of this ritual is that devotees will be cleansed of their sins and they can beget children. The devotees who bring the bull take them round the temple and tie it somewhere in the temple complex. Although devotees make offerings to the presiding diety in different ways, the most important one is Kode Mokku (offering of bull to God). The lighting of the holy lamp or Ganda Deepam is also considered auspicious by the devotees visiting the shrine. The Lord is seen in a meditation posture with five lingas surrounding the holy tank. Three mandapas were constructed on it and the statue of Lord Eshwara resides in the middle. In the temple premises there is a holy tank called the Dharma Gundam. To the right of the presiding deity is the idol of Sri Raja Rajeswari Devi and to the left is the idol of Sri Laxmi Sahitha Siddi Vinayaka. The presiding deity is Sri Raja Rajeswara Swamy, also called Rajanna. History records that Vemulawada was ruled by successive dynasties - the Ikshwakus, the Satavahanas and later by the Chalukyas who made it their state capital.
The puranic version has it that Lord Siva after having stayed at Kashi, Chidambaram, Srisailam and Kedareswaram chose to reside at Vemulawada. A big stream flowing by the side of the village feeds this. There is a big tank which is on the northern side of the Rajeswara temple called Dharmagundam. The Rajeswara temple is obviously so named, either because it was built by Rajaditya which was the Biruda of Narasimha I, of the Chalukyas of Vemulavada, who was the grandson of Vinayaditya Yuddhamalla I, or is named after him. There is also another temple called the Waddegeswaraswami temple. Vemulavada is famous as the seat of a Western Chalukya temple known as the Rajeswaraswami temple. Vemulavada is in Karimnagar District of Andhra Pradesh and is situated about 20 miles from the road from Karimnagar to Kamareddy. This temple also gains its importance with koda mokku a special offering made by devotees. Tha water in tha Dharma Gundam is believed to have medicinal properties.Įvery year at tha time of #MahaShiva Rathri devotees flock to Vemulawada in large numbers to offer prayers to Lord shiva. Pilgrims take a holy dip in tha tank called Dharma Gundam before going for their darshan. Vemulawada Raja Rajeswara temple has its own unique identity as it is one of tha most noted temples of telangana it makes for a good example of indian secularism as there is a Dargah inside the temple complex where all devotees offer prayers, irrespective of caste and creed.
